I saw someone say “people only like Jess because he was a toxic bad boy” 🙄 He was literally the least toxic of her boyfriends in my opinion but what do I know. Was he a perfect boyfriend? No, but toxic is a far stretch. Just say you don’t understand his character. Jess was a character that grew up with a bunch of trauma with parents who didn’t want him and was used to people around him just discarding him so when he had two people who did care about him he didn’t know what to do with it. He had no example of a healthy relationship at all and his neglectful mother constantly has abusive men in and out of their lives. Jess went through a lot but he overcame all of that and turned his shitty situation into a positive one. He encourages Rory to grow and be her best self and vice versa she does the same for him. He became less angry, he learned how to communicate better, he learned how to show up for those he loves and he continued to be a present figure in both of their lives, and was there for them in whatever ways they needed. He always had Rory’s best interest at heart, and truly loved her more than anything.
Jess was not a “bad boy” he was literally just a dork that wanted to read books and watch corny movies with Rory. It’s funny that he was supposed to be the “bad boy” but has the least amount of bad boy traits.
Jess’s ‘bad boy’ label to me is so, so funny. He is constantly reading, works two jobs, saved enough money to buy a car—but he’s the ultimate bad boy in the town’s eyes. Let’s be clear, the most ‘rebellious’ thing he did was the chalk outline outside Doose’s. Boy did magic tricks for his crush, why is he labeled a bad boy? 😭
jess mariano and rory gilmore are literally the SAME people at their core, just in opposite fonts. they MIRROR each other and are each other’s TWIN FLAMES. that’s exactly why they understand each other better than everyone else (asp herself said so). both are raised by teen moms and have deadbeat dads. yet, one is nurtured with love and care with a mom like lorelai. and the other is abandoned & ignored by a flaky mom like liz. both develop an immense love for reading regardless of whether it became kind of a coping mechanism. both exceed normal expectations of intelligence required for their age. hence, one goes above and beyond, strives for perfection with it, and craves validation while the other could not care less what people think and says “fuck it. rules don’t matter anymore for me. i know stuff”. one becomes stars hollow’s princess, held onto a pedestal by everyone around her. the other becomes stars hollow’s pariah, hated by every person he meets. both are under intense scrutiny by people where one is held to exceptionally high standards and the other is seen as “good for nothing”. both of them break out of those respective moulds as soon as they become young adults. and both play a pivotal role in helping each other break out of those moulds and still be true to their inner selfs. I COULD WRITE AN ENTIRE TEN-PAGE ESSAY ON THE PARALLELS BETWEEN THEM….I REALLY COULD!
